Toenail fungus is caused by either molds or fungi infecting the nail bed of the foot in 6-8% of all adults. Toenail fungus presents easily identifiable symptoms. There is generally no pain with toenail fungus. The first most noticeable symptom is a hardened and discolored nail. The nail may appear crumbly and yellow or even brown and clouded. A foul smell often accompanies the infection and this smelly debris may be seen under the nail. Eventually the nail will crumble, separate from the cuticle and fall off completely revealing the sensitive nail bed below. At this point it may be painful wearing shoes. If left untreated toenail fungus can spread and the final solution may be surgical removal of the nail. If you suspect you may be suffering from toenail fungus, do not let it go unchecked. Toenail fungus can sometimes be misdiagnosed as yellow nail syndrome or nail psoriasis so if you’re not sure about which condition might be affecting your foot, rather seek medical advice before using home remedies.
